Como jogar

  1. Set up a grid board (traditionally 15x15, sometimes 19x19); the first player takes black stones, the second takes white.
  2. Taking turns, each player places one of their own stones on an empty intersection.
  3. Once placed, a stone never moves and is never captured.
  4. The first player to line up five of their own stones in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins.
  5. If the board fills up with nobody making five in a row, it's a draw.

Como ganhar

Whoever lines up five of their own stones in a row first — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins. If the board fills up with no five in a row, it's a draw.

Dicas

  • Black moves first and, with no forbidden moves, has a known winning strategy. Swap who goes first each game to keep it fair.
  • An open three — three in a row with both ends free — is the core tactic: the opponent can only block one end, so you get a four next turn.
  • A double three — two open threes crossing at one stone — cannot both be blocked. That fork is what most wins come down to.
  • Open near the centre. The closer to an edge you play, the fewer directions remain in which a five can ever form.

Perguntas frequentes

Does six or more in a row (an overline) still count as a win?
Under casual freestyle rules, an "overline" of six or more in a row usually still counts as a win. Official Renju rules are stricter, though, and forbid the first player (black) from winning with certain moves, including overlines.
Does going first or second give you an advantage?
The first player (black) is considered to have the advantage. That's why official Renju rules add forbidden moves for black to keep things fair — but casual play usually skips those restrictions.
